A few modern furniture designs do incorporate some form of human-design interaction; though the scope of interaction is limited to convenience of usage. The Cuddle Mattress by designer Mehdi Mojtabavi changes all of this by incorporating ‘human intimacy’ as its primary advantage!

In normal circumstances, even if one loves to cuddle up to his/her partner, the actual act of cuddling results in physical discomfort after sometime. This is due to the numbness of the blood vessels and nerves around the arm and leg regions, caused by the physical weight of your partner.

The Cuddle Mattress traverses this predicament by incorporating special slats on the upper and lower part of the mattress. This ingenious arrangement allows one to slid and wedge his/her arms and legs inside the mattress cavities. Consequently, you can wrap your arms around your partner (from ‘beneath’ the mattress) without feeling the weight.

The intimacy ambit of the Cuddle Mattress however doesn’t just stop with the incorporation of these cavities. The factors for user-convenience are also taken into account, with the provision for both firm and soft slats. Furthermore, the slats are available in different materials like – latex, polyurethane and polyurethane memory foam, thus giving the user the opportunity to personally customize his/her comfort level.

Finally, as for the credentials of the Cuddle Mattress, the conception is no fluke. The design had already won a Red Dot award in 2007, while also emerging as one of the finalists for 2008 Industrial Designers Society of America.
