The above picture certainly proves that furniture items can hold themselves without fasteners. And, it seems apt and poetic that it was a San Francisco based designer named Robby Cuthbert that achieved this glorious feat of furniture design.
Similar to the working principle of a suspension bridge (much like San Francisco’s iconic Golden Gate Bridge), the items utilize arrays of steel cables that provide structural stability by virtue of just tensile force.
The only other material used for the furniture items is wood. So, in a nutshell, Cuthbert’s exclusive ‘wood and steel’ collection totally eschews any form of adhesive, screwing or clamping mechanism.
The secret to this interesting structural scope is explained in part by the designer. According to him, advanced techniques like laser cutters and 3D printers were instrumental in endowing their impeccable forms.
