We here at Home Harmonizing had the fortune of covering some wonderful design solutions for the homeless people. However, this time around, San Francisco-based non-profit group Lava Mae has opted for a conscientious project that is arguably more intrinsic when it pertains to the homeless person – hygiene. The incredible result is a mobile unit modified from a public transit bus, which offers bathroom completely free of charge.

According to a statistical study of 2013, there are more than 6,400 homeless people, scattered around different parts within the large city limits of San Francisco. The mobility of the Lava Mae shower bus comes in handy in such scenarios, as the unit can cater to people in different locations on a time-table basis. And, even beyond the scope of convenience, it is quality of free service offered by the endeavor that really makes its praiseworthy. To that end, the bus boasts of two separate private bathrooms with hot shower capacity, along with inclusion of speckless toilets, shampoo, soap and of course towels.

There is a laudable side to the whole public affair, with $75,000 being raised for the shower bus – a sum that had been funded by various private organizations, including Google. Furthermore, the folk at Lava Mae are also looking forth to more buses in future – an effort which surely will be complemented by San Francisco municipality’s own program of mobile toilets that have been installed in three different locations.

As for the precious effect of the Lava Mae shower bus itself on homeless people, Doniece Sandoval (from the organization) had this to say –

Their faces are just beaming. They’re so incredibly grateful. It’s a great feeling to just be able to offer people something so simple and yet so vital.
