Previously, we had comes across a few conscientious contrivances for homeless people, be it the mobile bathroom from San Francisco, or the tiny-houses made from ‘trash’ in Oakland. This time around, the novelty of helping humankind has taken a cleanliness turn, with two 20-year-old friends Lucas Patchett and Nicholas Marchesi, transforming their van into a mobile laundry machine – the Orange Sky Laundry.
Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, the two young social designers started their incredible endeavor with just a white-hued van that was equipped in a makeshift way with a portable generator. And, as with every social project, they had to depend on trickles of donation from every corner of the neighborhoods, which allowed for the installation of double washers and dryers inside the Orange Sky Laundry automobile.
The ultimate capacity of this prototype mobile laundry unit equates to 20 kg (44 lbs) of clothes being washed every hour. Wait, did we say – prototype? Well, that is because the conscientious project is going through its testing phase, which entails driving around the neighborhoods of Brisbane for 5 days a week. The diligent designers are also looking forth to serve free food while the homeless people are waiting for their clean clothes. To that end, they are considering a collaboration with local food donation groups, which would surely make the ambit much easier to organize and manage.
So, if you are sufficiently inspired by this scope, you can actually donate a small sum or even volunteer for the Orange Sky Laundry project. Go to this link, and remember – Christmas is just around the corner!
