Simon Gerbaud’s animated art entails the turning of objects to dust, and vice versa!

The symbolic element of destruction is indeed a powerful force. And, this ambit is even more pronounced through its antithetical approach, when ‘wrecking’ contrasts with the creative force of designs. Simon Gerbaud has incredibly found a way to exhibit this wondrous cycle of a physical entity, by reversing the imagery of creation and destruction. To that end, the animator systematically destroys conventional objects like laptops, shoes and chairs; and then creates their footage that dissects the entire scope of the odd process in a pictorial, stop-motion manner.

There is a method to the madness – many of the objects (or rather subjects in this case) are ground to dust or cut to pieces. This forms an integral part of the process; with Gerbuad even selectively salvaging the dust or the pieces, which are then aesthetically reconfigured to be transformed into fascinating visual ‘stories’. In other words, a pile of dust transforms into a full fledged laptop, or a dilapidated piece is morphed into a shiny shoe.

Such eccentric levels of metamorphosis took an interactive route with Gerbuad’s special 2012 installation for the XII Feria de las Calacas, held at Mexico. The control of this sequential pattern of creation and destruction was given to the audience members. In effect, the visitors could evaporate an entire shoe by just making high-pitched noises on the microphone, or they could even turn a laptop into dust (or vice versa) by just their breaths.

The animator has continued to grind his way to glory over these two years, with subjects ranging from refrigerator, shopping carts to hair dryer and plastic sculptures. You can check more of his unique visual magic in his website, and in the videos below.
