There are mugs that generate your image via thermo-electricity and there are mugs that keep your beverage warm through phase-changing layers. But what about mugs that tell you what you are drinking, and how much you should drink? Well, the above pictured Vessyl (by Mark One) belongs this specially ‘smart’ category – with its capacity to easily identify the beverage you are consuming, while also working out the health benefits of that particular drink!
Working in sync with a dedicated app (for iOS and Android), the mug can single out the beverage, and then gauge the various parameters of the beverage – like its protein, calories, fat, caffeine and sugar content. All the info collected is then send to your smartphone via Bluetooth, for easy accessing of the crucial data from your side.
Interestingly, users can also set personalized goal with the Vessyl’s intelligent measuring technology. For example, if you want to keep an eye on the calorie or caffeine intake, you have choose the particular monitoring option, which is also termed as a ‘lens’. On choosing your preferred lens, the mug can discreetly exhibit the magnitude of calories, caffeine or fat you have consumed during a set time interval.
The Vessyl also boasts of a separate hydration measuring tech known as ‘Pryme’. So if in a specific scenario you need to drink more water, the mug (and also the app-connected smartphone) alerts you to do so with a conspicuous blue line mark on the cup’s curving facade. Similar to our earlier covered Whale, the feature further helps us to maintain adequate levels of hydration with specific time-oriented suggestions.
Oddly enough, not much is divulged about the wonderful mechanism that fuels this incredible ambit. All we know is – the sensor-based device is depended on a ‘processor and set of algorithms’ that help in detecting the beverage. In fact, the built-in system of Vessyl is touted to be advanced enough to even identify different brands of the same drink. On the other hand, the mug also has the fascinating ability to ‘appraise’ home-made concoctions that are devoid of any commercial tagging.
In any case, the primary goal of the tech-flaunting Vessyl is pretty straightforward, as put forth by Justin Lee, CEO of Mark One –
Beverages are a major source of unnoticed calories, and Vessyl gives you the tools to easily know what you’re really drinking and motivate you to make healthier choices.
As for the commercial side of affairs, the product is expected to be available by the early period of 2015, with a retail price of $199. The company has also opted for a pre-order venture that will allow early backers to purchase the smart mug with a much reduced price of $99.
