Over the years, we have fortunately come across many interesting, innovative and ingenious design conceptions. However, there are still some designs that are on the other side of the spectrum, seemingly basking in their freakish to downright revolting glory. I daresay the ‘Bare Hair Project’ belongs to this bizarre category, and it uncannily alarms us with its weird essence.

From the sustainable perspective, the Bare Hair project entails the conscientious crafting of pouf covers from recycled PET bottles. But this is where our goodwill ends, as the shocker pops up in the next stage. According to the designers, the cushioning of these poufs are stuffed with human hair! In fact, this project was developed for Studio Västra Sandgatan, a Swedish hair establishment in Helsingborg.

The designers further point out that this usage of hair waste directly involves the customers in the manufacturing process of the furniture. While, we do agree with this improvement of functionality(in part derived from natural materials), the overall result is something that perhaps wouldn’t tickle the mainstream consumer’s fancy. Moreover, the transparency of the poufs further fuels that element of ‘disgust’ by the direct visual link to the mass of clotted hair waste.

So, at the end of the day, the Bare Hair remains one of those oddball conceptions we sometimes stumble across in the home decor realm. But then we should at least raise a toast to the industrious albeit slightly strange intentions of the designers involved.
