A design can only be considered truly modular when its usage pattern is defined by the very essence of its flexibility. In this regard, ‘Make-a-new Collection’ is certainly the ultimate modular design in furniture, giving the designer nigh endless possibilities on how to craft his specimen. These possibilities include the usage of raw materials as well as ideas from the durability perspective, thus espousing the very holistic nature of Cradle to Cradle principle.

Conceived by Dutch designer Melle Koot, the Make-a-new Collection line consists of several plywood units which can joined to make different forms of furniture like a table, a bookshelf or even a chair. The joining process is achieved by sturdy steel connectors, while the plywood is available in birch, magnolia, beech and linden, all with variant color schemes.

However, it is the core modular nature of the design that really tickles our fancy. For example, the joining of several plywood units gives form to a flexible table. This table can both extended and retracted as per the user’s preference. Furthermore, when the table has outlived its functionality, it can be converted to a chair or a bookshelf. In fact, the bookshelf is separately christened as the L-Shelf (due its shape), with its cabinet consisting of two modules.

Finally, beyond the modular scope, the design is also sustainable in its bearing. That means that it holds true to the ideals of Cradle to Cradle, thus being conscientious and practical at the same time.
