This is not the first time we have come across a ‘furniture item‘ that is defined by the user’s actions. But the so-named Martino Hamper (in honor of furniture designer Martino Gamper) from Brandon Washington puts a twist to the user-defined notion, by being flexibly created out of our inaction!
Designed as a functional chair, the seat only takes shape from our laundry-oriented procrastination. How so? Well, the ‘cushion’ component of the Martino Hamper proudly emerges when we have not really taken care of our laundry duties for a week or so. The heap of dirty clothes and smelly socks fill up the plastic basket, thus transforming it into a makeshift seating arrangement.
Now, the beauty of the Martino Hamper lies in the design’s intrinsic flexibility and transient nature. We can obviously take the designer’s route and bask in the glory of dirty laundry. However, we can also customize the seat to suit our improved, personalized version of functionality.
For example, we can fill the plastic hamper with real cushions or old clothes that have fallen into disuse. Or perhaps, we can notch it up a level, by filling the void with stuffed animals, thus giving our kids a creative exercise to ‘make’ their own comfortable seat.
