This is not the first time we have come across a desk that also allows us to comfortably rest. However, the above pictured Personal Space Bar desk gives the much needed significance to user-oriented privacy, while also bringing us sweet memories of the George Costanza Desk from Seinfeld.
Envisaged as a part of the Metaproject collection (for International Contemporary Furniture Fair), the Personal Space Bar desk was designed as a collaborative effort from industrial design student Kat Given and furniture maker Herman Miller, Inc.. And, as we can make out from the above image, the design is mainly used as a bar-like counter for casual working, drinking and dining from the outside.
But of course, there is more to the desk than just a usable counter. On the inward side of the furniture, the structure has an ample cavity that would allow a single user to easily and snugly cuddle up inside. This private space also has a connection to the front-facing side with a longitudinal recess for passing the wires of devices like laptops and mobile chargers.
Quite fascinatingly, the Personal Space Bar is not the only interesting user-oriented design from the Metaproject collection. There are other ingenious stuff like the Discretion Barrier, which combines a coat rack and a privacy compartment; or the Invitation Chair that fuses two chairs for better collaboration on office work.
